The "predator" big wave longboard
The "predator" big wave longboard
The "predator", was designed for those who want a high performance longboard to charge larger surf (head high +).
I always catagorise longboards in three groups. Small wave, all-rounder and big wave. These three groups can still have their own catagories within but that will be getting a bit too complicated explaining for this chapter.
The most important design difference, between a small wave and big wave board is the degree of lift created through rocker and bottom shape.
Small waves are traveling slower with less power. So, you need to create lift to be able to get the board up to paddling speed as quickly as possible to enable you to catch waves and maintain speed. Flatter and wider boards create more lift than larger rocker and narrower boards.
Surfboards are not happy out of the comfort zone that they where designed for. That is why you will never find a board that will go brilliant in all conditions (the holy grail)
When using a small wave designed board in larger surf, you will find that the take-offs are a bit sketchy and will probably "spin-out" on the bottom turn, especially when there is a little chop on the face. This is due to the excessive ammount of lift created.
The predator has been through a design process of testing and adjusting in many different surf situations. The final product has a fairly standard all-rounder rocker, with our superb parallel nose chanel, for the front 2/3rds but has a greatly accelerated tail rocker, with the tail rocker peak centered between the feet on the bottom turn (at the stringer and on the rail). This creates the suction to get you past the bottom turn in control. It runs a double concave through the fins to hold the water and not create turbulance on the tail rail. The rails are slightly "lowered", this reduces the ammount of water pressure allowing the rail to stay in the wave face. Even running small fins makes this board hard to "Spin out".
The other clever and probably unique design aspect of the Custard point predator range is that it comes in 3 sizes....... but they are all 9'1" long. What ?????? i hear you say.
There are narrow 22 1/4", medium 22 3/4" and wide versions 23 1/2". For instance, the medium version is 1/2" wider in all the measurements (nose, mid and tail) than the narrow version and the wide version is 1 1/4" on all measurements. This makes the rail line the same in all boards with an increase in flotation if required.
This board is super manouverable with great projection off the bottom turn and it still noserides. I like to call this a shortboarders longboard as it is capable of blistering top turns and we have had shortboarders adapting to this length very quickly. The predator will still go in smaller surf, but it is slightly "out of its comfort zone" for a regular longboard surfer, and we do have better boards for small waves, but if you want a longboard that is going to give you a "short board feel", then this is it.
